title: Joins
order: 5
---

A join combines two shapes: the host, which holds the join in its [modifier stack](../modifiers/index.md#the-modifier-stack), and a target, the shape it joins with. The join stays live: move, scale or edit the target and the host follows. Joins are added like the other modifiers, see [Adding a modifier](../modifiers/index.md#adding-a-modifier).

| Join | Page | What it does to the host |
|---|---|---|
| Union | [Boolean](boolean.md#union) | Adds the target to it |
| Difference | [Boolean](boolean.md#difference) | Cuts the target out of it |
| Intersect | [Boolean](boolean.md#intersect) | Keeps only the part inside the target |
| Slice | [Boolean](boolean.md#slice) | Splits it in two along the target; both pieces stay, as two shapes |
| Emboss | [Emboss & Engrave](emboss-engrave.md) | Raises its surface where the target passes through it |
| Engrave | [Emboss & Engrave](emboss-engrave.md#engrave) | Sinks its surface there |
| Carve | [Carve](carve.md) | Cuts a pocket the shape of the target, grown by an offset; the target keeps rendering in the pocket |

The seam of a join can be rounded with its **Blend**, see [Blending](../rounding-and-blending/blending.md).
